Background: Born to Alesandra Carniello, an entertainer from Rome, and Steven MacKenzie, a traveling guide from Glasgow, Ashley spent her childhood years in Glasgow with her parents and two brothers, Phillip and Tory.  After her teenage years were done and thus her necessary schooling done as well, she told her family she can't find herself in the things she does on Earth.  Supported by her parents and by her two brothers, succesful and well known musicians, she enrolled into Starfleet Academy.  After she could not make her mind what would be her career choice, she was chosen to enroll for a medic.

Starfleet Record: At first, it didn't go well for Ash.  She didn't like studying much and she had to learn a great deal.  She was falling behind and eventually started skipping classes.  This led to repercussions, which almost ended with her being expelled.  Instead, one of the professors took a liking to the young woman and finally started having serious talks with her, wondering why such a clever woman was faring so badly, giving her a chance to explain.  He eventually told her that she simply wasn't talented and personally interested in any aspect of the medical training they could provide, and with his help, she finally switched to engineering.

While Ash wasn't an overachiever, she understood engineering much better and was interested in the subject more.  This actually made her read about the subjects, and in turn, she started studying.  The more she knew, the more she was interested in learning more.

After Ash graduated, she was sent on an interview, where she explained she would like being sent as far away from home as possible, noting the exploring spirit she nurtured and the need to learn more.

Ash's first post came as an assistant chief on board the USS Kyoto, a ship that was sent on a patrol duty deep into the Beta Quadrant, closest to the Delta Quadrant, as it is known to the Federation.  The somewhat aged Galaxy class had seen better days before she came on board, and in a recent skirmish, she lost most of the engineering cadre.  It was on the Kyoto where she first experienced a real combat situation, and where her clever thinking freed the ship from the grasp of a Borg cube.  There, she served for another year, rising in rank quickly and eventually serving as chief engineer for some time when the CEO was incapacitated in another Borg incident.  Eventually, Kyoto was called back to Starbase 379 for repairs after yet another skirmish and two other ships, the USS Cleo and USS Moscow, took its place.  With their combined forces, they were able to subdue the cube, and force it to retreat.

Considering the heavy damage sustained by the Kyoto, the ship was to be taken out of service for repairs for five months.  Before it would be battle-ready again, and instead of waiting, Ash applied for a transfer, and it was granted.

In a remote section of Federation space, a new base, SB 1529 was built. A small fleet of ships would be venturing into new territories, so Ash asked to be assigned to one of the ships. She was accepted as chief engineer on the USS Starfire.
